In the last chapter of Aikagi-Kun To Shiawase Gohan, we saw that Hiro was receiving paid vacations, given by his employer. To celebrate her holiday, Nagisa brings drinks to share with Hiro like never before.

Hiro mentions that he avoids drinking with his colleagues because of its taste, but Nagisa assures him that it’s supposed to be paired with complementary foods so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. She chooses ‘sour lemon’ alcohol to drink and to go with it is shigureni, chicken karaage, potato salad, octopus karaage and pickled cucumber. Seeing that line of food, Hiro predictably asks Nagisa to thaw the rice while she tries not to drool over the food.

Watching Hiro enjoying his drinking experience, they talk about the different flavors of alcohol with different types of food, its texture, and spices. It’s quite enlightening and educational if you like Japanese food. But while all this conversation is going on, Nagisa notices that Hiro’s face is redder than her.

Hiro explains that he can’t stop drinking alcohol, putting it as something similar to eating salty potato chips and sweet ice cream. She suggests that she drink more water so she doesn’t get drunk. *spoiler, it does*

In Hiro’s drunken fit, he expresses how grateful he is that Nagisa makes him food every day. He also gives her a shoulder massage, during which he says in passing that he’s glad to be eating with her, since he gets too lonely to eat alone. And…then he falls asleep right there in the living room.

The next day, they both suffer from hangovers. After sobering up with a nice miso soup for their painful hangovers, they both laugh that they’re not good adults.

As it is a manga focused more on the part of the life and growth of two people, the romance goes to the background in the plot. But it’s there, like an ornament. So we can look forward to another day in the life of Andou Nagisa and Nishio Hiro. Their time together, in the context of food made with love and care.

Hiro’s vacation will be filled with a great time enjoying home cooking with Nagisa. While every breakfast, lunch, or dinner has the potential to be expensive, the happiness that comes with good food and good company is unique.

And we can enjoy this together, as this feel-good manga has a way of making it feel like a shared experience.
