Even in the heat of Candy Montgomery’s action with Allan Gore, she continued her friendship with Betty Gore. She throws a surprise party for the pregnant woman at a church choir dinner, a month ahead of schedule. Both women were devoted members of the Lucas Methodist Church choir, and since their lives revolved around the church, they often bonded.

What happened the day Betty Gore died?
In the laundry room at 410 Dogwood Street, Betty Gore was found lying in a veritable pool of her blood. Betty Gore had been slashed 41 times, almost mutilated, with a chopped one meter long. The right side of her face, as well as parts of her limbs, are completely gone, but what’s even more disconcerting is that her youngest daughter was home the whole time, safe in her crib in a another room.
Candy Montgomery, whose Betty approached after meeting her at a First United Methodist Church of Lucas service, is believed to be behind the brutal and senseless murder. It wasn’t until Allan admitted to having an affair with Candy a few months before the incident that the authorities managed to find a possible motive.

According to Candy’s account, during her fight with Betty Gore, during which they both tried to take control of the axe, Candy Montgomery nearly escaped the room. She hit Betty Gore to the head, drawing blood, and found an opportunity to flee, but Betty Gore didn’t let her go.

The 30-year-old at the time claimed she hadn’t planned anything in advance. So on October 29, 1980, with a polygraph test confirming her statements, the jury found Candy not guilty of the Betty’s death.
