Although the last issues of author and illustrator Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen series have been very trying, there may be some good news coming in future issues. After Sukuna used a bath to suppress Megumi Fushiguro’s soul and the former made the latter’s body his own, fans were sure that Megumi’s death was imminent.
However, upon taking a closer look at the previous issue, a few Jujutsu Kaisen fans were able to uncover a way to escape for Megumi, as well as an omen for such an event. Combined with Megumi’s characterization and the exploits seen throughout the series so far, fans are almost certain that Megumi isn’t finished yet.
The final issue of Jujutsu Kaisen begins with Kenjaku, Uraume, and Sukuna at the base of the Zenin Clan. Kenjaku reveals his intention to end the Culling Game so he can merge with Tengen, before expressing interest in Sukuna’s bath. He explains that the bath was originally used to turn heirlooms into cursed tools, thus protecting them from being used by outsiders.
Kenjaku explains that a cursed energy solution is being created by grinding and filtering cursed spirits chosen during a Kodoku ritual. This is a ritual used by Chinese apothecaries, which involves placing several poisonous creatures in an enclosed space. The one organism that survived was believed to be the most poisonous, absorbing toxins from all the others. Kenjaku then confirms that Uraume used cursed spirits for the ritual, and she then explains how she harvests them.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 216 then reveals that the purpose of the bath is to sink Megumi’s soul into darkness, thus limiting her interference. Sukuna then comes out of the bath and asks where Tsumiki Fushiguro is, which leads Kenjaku to bring up the fact that Yorozu has always had a one-sided crush on Sukuna, who then reveals that he doesn’t need Yorozu, but his ship. .
It is then revealed that Sukuna plans to kill Tsumiki to cause Megumi to fall into darkness, thus killing Megumi and making her body Sukuna’s. Kenjaku then brought Sukuna to Sendai Settlement, where he seemingly killed Ryu Ishigori in a brief fight before confronting Yorozu. The chapter ends with a face-off between these two old acquaintances, which portends a fight in future issues.
In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 216, fans saw Sukuna emerge from his bath with a slight wound, equivalent to a paper cut, on his right index finger. Although he didn’t comment on it specifically, fans speculated that it was due to Megumi’s interference in some way. Sukuna’s comment asking Kogane where Tsumiki Fushiguro was reinforced this idea.
Fans also point out that Megumi is known to evolve and transcend his limits when pushed to his limits, claiming that pushing him to his limits will create that evolution. There’s also the fact that Megumi’s character is closely tied to thriving in the shadows, underscored by her cursed technique and her status as the black sheep of the Zenin clan.
Jujutsu Kaisen fans also point out that the bath flooded Megumi’s body with cursed energy, which may have affected her soul. Combined with being pushed into Sukuna’s inner darkness, this could give him the momentum and space he needs to fully evolve and reclaim his body.
While some fans dismiss this assumption by claiming that Megumi wouldn’t get stronger through her own efforts, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In order for Megumi to get her body back, he will have to fight a battle against Sukuna, in which no one else can help him. Even though outside sources can weaken Sukuna to help Megumi, it’s still up to him to finish the job and get her body back.
Thus, many Jujutsu Kaisen fans are confident that Megumi will return in future issues. However, this is pure speculation, and only Akutami himself knows exactly what will happen in the upcoming chapters and arcs of the hit manga series.
