- What would have happened if Minato had recognized Obito behind the mask?
- What would happen after Minato’s defeat in this alternate scenario?
However, Obito had other plans. He had learned that the seal of the Nine-Tailed Fox would be weakened when Naruto was born, so he devised a plan to start a war by controlling the fox. Minato managed to save Naruto and Kushina when they were attacked, but he couldn’t stop Obito from extracting the nine-tailed fox from his wife.
Later, the two had a one-on-one fight, where Minato aimed to unleash Obito’s control over the Nine-Tailed Fox. Prior to the fight, the former questioned Obito’s identity. He almost believed it was Madara but realized that was not possible as Madara was supposed to be long dead.
He eventually defeated Obito, but he and Kushina sacrificed their lives to protect Naruto when the Nine-Tails intentionally attempted to kill him.
What would have happened if Minato had recognized Obito behind the mask?
Minato and Obito crossed paths again during the Fourth Shinobi World War, when the former was summoned by the Edo Tensei jutsu. Obito made him feel guilty by calling him an incompetent teacher, unable to be there to save his students or even to recognize one behind a mask.
Minato regretted not recognizing Obito that night. He thought things would have been different if he had. Maybe Kushina would still be alive and Naruto wouldn’t have had to suffer so much. This had fans wondering if things really would have been different in a positive way.
Minato was too busy protecting the village to have time to think about the identity of the person behind the mask. Also, Obito was a young child when he last saw him, so it would have been impossible to immediately assume that the attacker was Obito. But even if he had admitted it, things would have gotten more complicated and defeating Obito would have been more difficult. He would have been a bit hesitant to tackle his student who was forced to choose the wrong path to peace.
And, knowing Obito, he would have made his master uncomfortable by claiming he couldn’t protect his own students and was therefore incompetent. This would have disturbed the latter mentally, and he would not have been able to time his attacks precisely. This way, it would be easier for Obito to use Kamui on his teacher, eventually defeating him.
What would happen after Minato’s defeat in this alternate scenario?
The defeat would have made things more chaotic, eventually leading to Kushina and Naruto’s deaths. Someone with a large amount of village chakra could eventually seal the nine-tailed fox within himself, becoming the next jinchuriki. That someone could be Hiruzen, as he could use the Reaper’s Death Seal, which made it easier to seal Nine-Tails within himself and kill them both.
After Hiruzen’s death, Danzo would most likely become the next Hokage, and with that, Konoha’s fate would be placed in the wrong hands.
So, yes, if Minato had recognized Obito that day, things would have turned out differently, but for the worse. The shinobi world would have been in total chaos with very little hope for peace.
