The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived! Our favorite couch princess is back in town! Wataru Momose, the author of Romantic Killer, brings us a refreshing new perspective on female leads through this hilarious romantic comedy. With the manga ending in 2020, Netflix decided to take over its anime adaptation and brought the series to life in August 2022.
With 12 episodes in total, the anime was well received by the public and increased the popularity of not only the show, but also the ‘otome game’ plot in general. After high demand, Romantic Killer will be back very soon with Season 2 on Netflix, so stay tuned for the latest updates!
‘Otome games’ (also known as ‘Maiden games’) are story-based video games aimed at the female population, the main goal of which is for the female player to fall in love with the male counterpart within the game.
This genre of anime usually involves multiple male love interests to satisfy viewers with the freedom of choice for the female lead. The fairy tale story that most of these often end up following is like the icing on the cake!
Romantic Killer is one of many; evidence of such a plot that falls under the reverse harem genre bringing poignant moments to the table. Anime with similar ‘otome game’ plots include Diabolik Lovers, Utano Prince-Sama, and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Roads Lead to Doom! well worth checking out if Romantic Killer is your cup of tea!
Romantic Killer is funny, heartwarming, and overall a satisfying anime to sit back and watch. Be it the plot or the animation, this rom-com is not lacking in any form or form. The exciting events and incidents that follow the female lead make it binge-worthy, leaving no room for distraction or boredom.
Anzu Hoshino, our beloved protagonist, has no interest in complicating her life with romance. The only love she has is reserved exclusively for three things: video games, chocolate and Momohiki, her cat.
Romantic Killer captures the audience’s attention through its magical story and Hoshino’s exciting yet comedic journey to find love. The series of events that follow this “anti-heroine” throughout the process generates a closeness between the protagonist and the viewers.
Romantic Killer| Netflix
In Season 1, Anzu confronts Riri, a love cupid, while playing an otome game and becomes a test subject to experience a real-life dating harem. She is forced to put aside her three favorite things and focus on building a love life for herself. Tsukasa Kazuki, the most popular boy in school, becomes the first love interest in Hoshino’s life, and Riri is hell-bent on setting her up with him.
Riri, this tiny sorcerous creature hovers around Anzu and attracts handsome boys in hopes of sparking romance. Some would call it a dream come true! But for Anzu, this was as bad as it could get. She had no interest in pursuing any of the boys Riri tried to set her up with and showed restraint. She wasn’t going to let a magician turn her love life into a dating sim!
But as the series progresses, Hoshino is seen to have more personal interactions with her love interests. Tsukasa, Junta, and Hijiri, with their quirks and unique approaches to Anzu, leave viewers with a soft spot for at least one, if not all of them. The attention to building a connection between Anzu and the boys helps make the show feel realistic in its unrealistic context.
Season 1 ends with Anzu being given an ultimatum to choose her romantic partner before she finishes high school, or she’ll have to sacrifice her beloved video games, chocolates, and Momohiki forever! The development of her relationship with Anzu keeps us waiting with anticipation: who will she choose?
Ending on a cliffhanger, curiosity is definitely not going to kill the cat anytime soon! Since season 2 is on the way. For all those who have been waiting with anticipation, your wishes have finally been answered by Riri, our favorite magician!
