The Elusive Samurai follows the life of a boy trying to stay one step ahead of those who want to kill him. Loosely based on the life of Hōjō Tokiyuki, the manga follows the boy on his mission to exact revenge on those who ruined his family.
Hōjō Tokiyuki has no worries growing up. He was lucky enough to be born into the Hōjō Clan. They were effectively the governing body of his area. But in reality, they are nothing more than simple figureheads.
Hōjō Tokiyuki, son of Hōjō Tokatoki, was the next to inherit his father’s position as head of the clan and as head of the Governing Body. One interesting thing to note is that Tokiyuki is not Hōjō Tokatoki’s firstborn. His firstborn is not of legitimate conception and thus Tokiyuki became next in line. Ironically, being the most powerful people is what made them weak.
Tokiyuki has no life skills to speak of. It’s not entirely his fault like his whole life; everything was served to him on a silver platter. You can be 100% sure that finding himself in the middle of a massacre was something he didn’t even imagine would happen. The one responsible for his downfall was Ashikaga Takauji, who is also based on a real-life historical figure.
Summary of The Elusive Samurai chapter 96
We are right in the middle of an all out war in this chapter. The Chapter begins with Mochizuki standing on a Fallen Oyama Hidetomo. The duo are recognized as tough opponents. We then see someone go through their enemies like nothing happened. He seems to psych himself and his followers with every word that comes out of his mouth.
We then see a soldier approaching Tadayoshi on horseback. He is there to inform her that it is time to retire. Though Tadayoshi doesn’t want to take the coward’s way out, he chooses to live to fight another day. The Ashikaga seems to have bitten off more than he could chew and is now looking for an exit with his head intact.

However, there is still one thing left to do. The Shinno Moriyoshi affair. Letting him live will not be good for the Ashikaga, and they have sent an Assassin to kill him. When they arrived at Moriyoshi, it was as if he had expected this all along. He welcomed the Assassin to him with open arms. He proclaimed that he was the Son of Go-Daigo and told Takauji that his emotions would fail him.
The Elusive Samurai Chapter 97 Spoilers
There is not much information known about what to expect from the next chapter. In the previous one, we saw the ongoing battle in Kamakura come to an end. Now the characters have to deal with the aftermath of the battle. It seems that there are many casualties on both sides. And it would be difficult to build the infrastructure back to the way it was before. There is also the murder of Shinno Moriyoshi.
They probably know that the culprit is Fuchinobe. It would be interesting to see how they will react to the murder of Go-Daigo’s own son. He was a true warrior, and even in death, he was honorable. This victory could put Tokiyuki one step closer to his goal. Hopefully, Hōjō Tokiyuki will be able to recover everything he has lost. And keep it close so he never loses it again.
